Garmin and ASUS to end smartphone collaboration in early 2011?

The smartphone collaboration between Garmin and ASUS is set to end in January 2011 if Chinese-language Economic Daily sources are correct. The alliance which started in February 2009 has failed to live up to its expectations. Garmin is looking to withdraw completely from the smartphone market while ASUS would continue alone.

Recent rumours had suggested that Garmin-Asus would release Windows Phone 7 smartphones in early 2011. It would appear that these plans are now either dead or that ASUS will move forward on its own.

Garmin hinted back in September that it could pull out of the market after confirming that smartphone sales were not meeting its expectations.

While the partnership is set to dissolve, the two companies will continue to work together with Garmin providing navigation software on future ASUS-branded devices.
