E Ink today announced the release of a colour version of its e-paper technology. Called E Ink Triton, it can display thousands of colors and 16 shades of gray while offering the same benefit as grayscale only e-ink displays (readable in direct sunlight and low-power consumption).
“E Ink Triton is a response to market need for a color ePaper display that mimics the printed paper experience,” E Ink Chairman Scott Liu said in a statement. “Triton will compliment our monochrome product line to enable new markets.”
Like its E Ink Pearl technology, E Ink Triton is about 20 percent faster than the older generation of e-ink displays.
The E Ink Triton technology is already scheduled to be featured in a colour e-reader to be offered by Hanvon, a Chinese e-reader vendor. With both 3G and Wi-Fi connectivity, it could go on sale in China as early as March 2011 for about US$440.
E Ink expects Triton displays could be used not only for e-reading devices but also in wireless devices such as remotes and game controllers, thermostats and industrial displays, point of sale devices and in-store signage.
