Clearwire confirms two more 4G smartphones for 2010

Clearwire

As part of its Q1 earnings announcement, Clearwire today revealed that it plans on releasing two 4G smartphones this year.

The Company also expects to launch two WiMAX smartphones by the end of 2010. From Samsung, an Android-based 3G/4G/WiFi device optimized for heavy video and video communications use, and a 3G/4G/WiFi enabled phone from HTC.

Clearwire further clarified during the earnings call that followed that both new devices will be Clear branded. This suggests that these two will be in addition to the already announced HTC Evo 4G. Another possibility, albeit less exciting, is that the HTC Evo 4G is the HTC device in question and will simply be Clear-branded.

Clearwire now has over 970,000 WiMAX customers after adding some 283,000 new subscribers in Q1 alone. It also plans to add coverage in 19 new cities this summer and cover New York City, Los Angeles, Boston, Denver, Minneapolis, the San Francisco Bay Area, Miami, Cincinnati, Cleveland and Pittsburgh by the end of the year.
