CES 2010: Intel reveals App Store for netbooks

Intel

Intel unveiled today the Intel AppUp center, an application store focused on netbook computers. Currently in beta, the Intel AppUp center is clearly designed to offer an experience similar to that of Apple’s App Store but for Intel Atom-powered devices.

“The Intel AppUp center offers netbook users quick and easy access to applications specifically tailored to their mobile lifestyle,” said Renee James, corporate vice president and general manager, Intel Software and Services Group. “Our store does the work of aggregating, categorizing and validating applications so consumers can shop, collect and install from one easy source. With today’s kickoff of our beta store, both developers and consumers will be able to take advantage of the rapid expansion of this new category of computing as the stores continually add apps.”

The beta client software is currently available for Windows machines. A Moblin-based client will be released later.

A number of applications are already available and cover categories such as education, entertainment, games, health, and social networking. Developers will receive 70 percent of sales with Intel keeping the remainder.

Intel is also working with its partners to offer tailored stores. Acer, Asus, Dell, and Samsung are already working on such stores.
