AT&T to launch LTE by mid-2011

AT&T Wireless

AT&T yesterday revealed that it will launch its LTE network by mid-2011. The revelation was made at the Bank of America Merrill Lynch 2010 Media, Communications & Entertainment Conference by AT&T Operations CEO John Stankey. It is already conducting trials in Baltimore and Dallas.

AT&T’s LTE network will cover up to 75 million potential customers by the end of 2011. This could put it substantially behind Verizon which expects to cover about 100 million potential customers with their LTE network by the end of this year.

Stankey also confirmed that AT&T will deploy a nationwide HSPA+ upgrade this year which will offer real-world download speeds of 7 Mbps.
