ASUS developing two ebook readers

ASUS may be the latest player to jump into the nascent ebook reader market. It looks set to release two different models later this year.

The first device is the DR-570. Unlike many ebook readers already on the market, this one promises a 5.7-inch OLED colour display (offering a 768 by 1024 resolution with 0.03 second refresh rate). It would also offer 3G and/or Wi-Fi connectivity and support for Flash video, 412MB RAM, 4GB of internal memory, an SDHC card slot, and a 1530mAh battery. It could also offer up to 122 hours of battery life.

A second model, the ASUS DR-950, comes with more usual specifications. It would come with a 9-inch e-ink display (1024 by 768). Also offering 3G (HSDPA or perhaps WiMAX) and Wi-Fi connectivity, it would come with either 2 or 4GB of internal memory, an SD card slot, a USB port and a 3.5mm headphone jack. It could be 9mm thick and weigh 370 grams.

Both devices will support ePub, PDF, TXT and MP3 formats. The DR-570 could also support MP4 and AVI while the DR-950 would support Audible, HTML, and various image formats.

ASUS is expected to release the DR-570 before the end of the year but it’s less clear when the DR-950 will become available.
