Android 2.1 headed to Motorola DROID with next OTA update? (Updated)

Engadget has learned that the next Motorola DROID OTA update will be based on Google Android 2.1. The update is to include:

  • Multi-touch support for the browser
  • Including of Google Goggles
  • Current Android 2.0.1 home screen with drawer tab to remain
  • No active wallpapers
  • Addition of news and weather widgets

It’s not clear why some functionality from Android 2.1 will not be included but it could well be tied to the hardware requirements.

There is no word yet on when Verizon will begin to push out the new update.

Update: Motorola has now confimed that it will begin to deploy the Google Android 2.1 update this week. According to to their official Facebook page:

Hi all– we know you are frustrated with the lack of details regarding Android software upgrades and we sincerely apologize for not being able to share info sooner. We’re happy to relay the 2.1 upgrade to DROID will start to roll out this week, and we will have more information to share on other device upgrades later this week as well. Thanks for your patience and continued support.
