Acer held a press event today in New York to unveil a family of tablets and a new smartphone.
Mobility, which has always been part of Acer’s DNA, finds a new form of expression in the range of tablets on offer, which feature various display sizes and models designed to fit different kinds of usage scenarios
First up, Acer unveiled a Windows 7 tablet. Powered by an AMD dual core processor, it comes with a 10.1-inch WXGA display, dual 1.3MP cameras, and HDMI output. It should be available in February 2011.
Acer will also launch a 10.1-inch Android tablet. Powered by a dual-core 1GHz processor, it will come with an unspecified version of Android (Gingerbread or Honeycomb likely) with a Acer user interface, a 5MP rear-facing camera, a front-facing camera, and an HDMI output. It should be available in April 2011.
Acer will also launch a 7-inch Android tablet in April 2011. It will use a dual-core 1.2GHz Qualcomm processor with Adobe Flash Player 10.1 support. It will come with 3G and Wi-Fi connectivity, DLNA support, and Dolby Mobile Technology.
Finally is a new Acer smartphone with “the soul of a tablet.” Featuring a larger than usual display, Acer describes it as “100% phone and 100% tablet.” It will come with a 1GHz Snapdragon processor, a 4.8-inch display running at 1024 by 480 and LED edge lighting, HSDPA connectivity, 802.11 b/g/n Wi-Fi Bluetooth 3.0, an 8MP camera with 720p HD video recording and an LED flash, a 1.3MP front-facing camera, and DLNA.
Acer also announced its own app Store called Alive. It will offer apps, games, movies, music and ebooks. It will launch for Windows 7 with an Android version to follow in Q2 2011 when the Android tablets become available.
It would appear that Acer intends to be quite the competitor in the tablet space in 2011.
