With Google Android 1.5 (Cupcake) behind it, Google has turned its attention to future versions and new features for its mobile operating system. Two additional releases are currently scheduled for later this year: Android 1.6 (codenamed Donut) and Android 2.0 (codenamed Eclair). A third version, codenamed Flan, is in the works as well.
There are a couple of areas of focus for the upcoming versions. The first will focus on improving support for business users. Andy Rubin, Google’s Director of Mobile Platforms, recognized that “Today, we don’t support many enterprise applications but in the future, I think enterprise will be a good focus for us.” The second will continue to focus on social networking services and their deeper integration into the operating system.
Rubin also indicated that we could see Qualcomm Snapdragon-powered Android devices in the future. The powerful processor would allow Android to offer features like 3D gaming.
Google’s Android future certainly looks promising.
