According to UK-based The Register, Viewsonic, better known for its LCD displays, is getting into the mobile handset business. Few details are available right now but the company is looking to introduce a 3G smartphone lineup in China initially. Europe and North America would follow later. No specific timelines were revealed.
According to James Chu, Chairman of ViewSonic, smartphone production will allow the company to apply its “display technology to an even larger and rapidly growing worldwide market.”
Will Viewsonic discover, like Garmin, that expertise in one area does not necessarily translate into the ability to make smartphones?
