Rumours have suggested for a while that Amazon is working on a successor to its successful Kindle ebook reader. An announcement is set for February 9th (tomorrow) at the Morgan Library & Museum in New York and many expect the company to unveil it at the event. Now, pictures of the rumoured Kindle 2 have all but confirmed that such a device is on its way even if the announcement does not take place on February 9th.
The pictures show a much thinner device than the original with built-in speakers and a metal back.
According to MobileRead.com, it will go on sale on February 24th for US$359, the same price as the current Kindle. It remains to be seen if we will see it outside of the United States.
Amazon recently also announced that it is planning to stop offering ebooks in the Microsoft Reader and Adobe e-book formats. Instead, it will focus on the Kindle and Mobipocket formats. Amazon did not provide specific timelines though.
