A report by Korean-based HMC Investment Securities is suggesting that Samsung is getting ready to make some dramatic changes to the stable of operating systems it offers on its mobile devices. Symbian could disappear completely by 2011 and Window Mobile could see its share drop to about 20 percent by 2012 (down from about 80 percent this year).
After announcing its intentions to develop its own Linux-based operating system back in August, Samsung now appears set to act on them. We could see a number of devices running this OS next year and as much as fifty percent of its devices could run the unnamed OS by 2012. It remains to be seen whether developers will want to support yet another platform.
Samsung will also release more Android-powered devices. Next year, some 30 percent of its devices could be powered by Google’s open source mobile operating system. That proportion would remains steady into 2012 at the expense of Symbian and Windows Mobile.
