Not a smooth launch for the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic in North America

Nokia 5800 XpressMusic

Friday, Nokia announced that the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic is now available in the United States. Since its launch in October in the UK, Nokia has been gradually rolling it out to additional markets.

The Nokia 5800 XpressMusic is powered by a touchscreen version of the S60 user interface. It comes with a 3.2-inch widescreen (16 by 9 aspect ratio) touchscreen display, 8GB of memory, a 3.2MP camera, a 3.5mm headphone jack and built-in surround stereo speakers. It features a virtual alphanumeric keypad and a virtual QWERTY keyboard as well as a pen stylus and a guitar pick for the true music enthusiasts.

The Nokia 5800 XpressMusic sells for US$399 at Nokia Flagship stores in New York and Chicago, www.nokiausa.com and independent retailers and e-tailers. For a limited time, it comes with a US$50 voucher for Amazon Video on Demand and one month of free turn-by-turn voice guided navigation through Ovi Maps.

Unfortunately, the launch has not gone smoothly for Nokia. The Boy Genius reports that Nokia has halted sales of the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic due to issues with Internet connectivity (no 3G/3.5G signal) on many of the handsets sold since Friday. It is also showing as backordered on the www.nokiausa.com site.

Hopefully Nokia will have the situation quickly rectified.
