Earlier today, The Guardian reported that Nokia was developing a mobile device powered by Google Android. The new touchscreen smartphone would apparently be unveiled in September at the Nokia World conference. The report quoted industry insiders as its source. Such a move would mark a significant change in philosophy for Nokia.
It did not take long for Nokia to dismiss the rumours.
“Absolutely no truth to this whatsoever,” said a Nokia spokesman. “Everyone knows that Symbian is our preferred platform for advanced mobile devices.”
The report was also denied by Joseph Gallo, a Nokia Communications Specialist, via Twitter.
“re: Nokia’s rumored Android phone and you can quote me on this: We (Nokia) are NOT making an Android smartphone. Symbian is our platform…”
It was only late last year that Nokia completed its acquisition of Symbian Limited and turned over the to the newly formed Symbian Foundation which would provide partners with a royalty-free license to a standardized operating system and user interface.
