No more Windows Mobile devices from Palm

As part of its latest financial earnings announcement, Palm CEO Jon Rubinstein announced that Palm will no longer offer devices with operating systems other than its own webOS.

Due to importance of webOS to our overall strategy, we’ve made the decision to dedicate all future development resources to the evolution of webOS. Which means that going forward, our roadmap will include only Palm webOS-based devices.

Since 2005, Palm has used both its own PalmOS and Windows Mobile in its devices. The former was aimed at the entry level market and the latter was used in the Palm Treo line and was aimed more at higher markets and business users. The announcement marks the end for both of these. It’s unclear at this point whether the Treo line will end with the current Treo Pro or if it will live on powered by webOS instead.

Palm also revealed that it had shipped a total of 823,000 smartphone during its first 2010 fiscal quarter but did not break the number down to indicate how many of these were Palm Pres.
