A couple of weeks ago, Asustek revealed that it plans to release its own ebook reader to take on the likes of Amazon and its Kindle and Sony and its Reader line. New details have now come to light about this move.
According to a spokesman for Asus in the UK, the company could offer more than one device (as Sony currently does). Both a budget and a premium version could be offered. Asustek is apparently aiming for a £100 price point for the budget device (but we remember what happened with the Eee PC).
The premium device could come with a hinged spine, allowing a reader to see two pages at the same time, giving it a much closer book experience than current ebook readers. The dual-screen configuration could also allow the reader to have his book on one page and a browser or a virtual keyboard on the other. The device could also sport a colour display, speakers, a webcam and a microphone.
It is still not clear what Asustek will do to deliver content to its devices. Will it partner with an established player or will it build its own content delivery platform?
