Motorola co-CEO Sanjay Jha revealed during the company’s latest earning results announcement that Microsoft will not release Windows Mobile 7 until 2010. Answering a question about whether Motorola would continue to release Windows Mobile devices, Jha said,
“As you know, Windows 6 series is available in 2009 and as compared to Android, we believe in 2009 Android is more competitive; more of our effort and focus in 2009 is going to Android, but in 2010 when Windows 7 will become available, we will then participate in a more focused way in Windows Mobile 7 in 2010.”
The news that Windows Mobile 7 devices will only come out in 2010 is not new. A number of earlier rumours have suggested similar dates. The statement also confirms rumours that Motorola is scaling back its Windows Mobile investment even it it is only temporary.
The timelines also align with those outlined by Andy Lees earlier when describing what Microsoft has in store for Windows Mobile. In the meantime, Microsoft is expected to unveil Windows Mobile 6.5 at this month’s GSMA Mobile World Congress.
