Last week, during a conference call with analysts, Garmin announced last week that it was delaying the release of its upcoming smartphones to the second half of 2009. The delays are being attributed to the complexity of developing the custom Linux-based operating system.
Garmin first announced the nüvifone over a year ago, promising a Q3 2008 release. Delays then pushed the release to the first half of 2009. On the heels of an announcement to partner with Asus, Garmin renamed its original nüvifone to Garmin-Asus nüvifone G60 and announced plans for additional phones.
Garmin reports that the company is now in the testing phase of the certification process, suggesting that the bulk of the OS development is complete.
