UIQ Technology AB, a mobile operating system developer, announced that it had filed for bankruptcy in Sweden today. With both Motorola and Sony Ericsson, its two primary backers, announcing plans to join the Symbian Foundation a while back, UIQ faced a difficult future. According to UIQ Chief Executive Johan Sandberg,
“There are no opportunities to create a new line of business in the current financial climate.”
About six months ago, it started to lay off staff. Today, UIQ is down to about 200 employees.
Both Motorola and Sony Ericsson also joined the Open Handset Alliance, driving another nail into UIQ’s coffin.
