Digitimes is reporting that Microsoft will promote future Windows Mobile-based devices as Windows phones. It will drop reference to the operating system version number.
It’s not clear why Microsoft is doing this but it may be to distance itself from the fact that Windows Mobile 6.5 is not likely to be a major upgrade. The Windows Mobile 6 platform dates back to February 2007 and is showing its age against competitors such as the Apple iPhone and Google Android operating systems.
DigiTimes also corroborates earlier rumours about dates for the release of Windows Mobile 7.
