LTE network goes live in parts of Norway and Sweden

TeliaSonera announced yesterday the commercial launch of its 4G network in Stockholm, Sweden and Oslo, Norway.

“We are very proud to be the first operator in the world to offer our customers 4G services. The use of mobile broadband in the Nordic countries is exploding and customers need higher speeds and capacity. This is why we launch 4G services in both Stockholm and Oslo,” says Kenneth Karlberg, President and Head of Mobility Services.

While theoretical peak speeds can reach 100Mbps, real-world speeds will be lower but will still support HD video streaming, extensive online gaming, and two-way video calls with significantly lower latency than 3G’s.

TeliaSonera is offering introductory pricing of SEK4 in Sweden or NOK1 in Norway per month until July 1st. Pricing will then rise to SEK599 (Sweden) and NOK699 (Norway) per month after that. This includes a 4G-only modem (the Samsung GT-B3710 USB modem) which customers will be able to exchange for free for one that will handle both 4G and 3G when it is available in the second quarter.

TeliaSonera will continue to deploy its LTE network to Norway’s 4 largest cities and Sweden’s 25 largest cities in 2010. It could also extend the deployment to include Denmark.
