There is no question that HTC has been a dominant force in the Windows Mobile world but just how much is surprising. During MWC, Andy Lees, SVP of Microsoft’s Mobile Communications Business, indicated that Microsoft has now sold over 50 million Windows Mobile phones. This is an impressive number that Microsoft has achieved with some 50 hardware partners, including HTC.
Peter Chou, HTC’s CEO, followed Andy Lees and said that HTC has sold more than 40 million Windows Mobile phones in the past 12 years.
Put these two numbers together, and assuming that both are correct, and it reveals that HTC has sold some 80 percent of all Windows Mobile handsets. And the other 49 partners have only sold 20 percent. One factor that could be skewing these numbers is that HTC used to be an OEM for many of these other Microsoft partners. Is HTC counting those devices in its claim?
