A Forbes article revealed that HTC is looking to focus more on its product design efforts to give the company a higher profile in the consumer space. To do so, HTC will leverage its purchase of California-based design firm One & Co. HTC first collaborated with on the design of the HTC Touch Diamond.
We’re already starting to see the results of the two companies’ work. HTC’s Android phones come in a number of colours and the new HTC Sense user interface shows a new focus on customer-centric applications such as Twitter and Facebook. Some upcoming devices like the HTC Tattoo will also feature customizable covers. According to Claude Zellweger, a partner at One & Co:
“We’re trying to strike a more fun note in software and hardware. These phones are less business-oriented and that should be reflected in their materials, forms and colors.”
While HTC is striving for design consistency, it will do so on two tracks: One for Google Android devices and another for its Windows Mobile phones. The former will continue to be more consumer focused and may continue to use a playful “chin” or angled base. The latter will come in dark, glossy finishes and will not feature chins, giving them a more professional look.
One & Co promises that we will see more of its influence, including some new form factors, next year.
