Google Android is set to make significant inroads in the mobile space this year. Research firm Strategy Analytics expects that some 8 million Android powered mobile phones will be sold this year. This would translate to a 10-fold growth forecast.
“Android is now in a good position to become a top-tier player in smartphones over the next two to three years,” said Neil Mawston, a director at Strategy Analytics.
Some 152 million smartphones were sold last year and the market could grow by as much as 20 percent this year despite the global economic downturn. Even with that impressive growth, Android quite a ways to go to catch up other players in this space. For example, the iPhone sold 13.7 million units last year and Symbian devices amounted for about half of all smartphone sales.
