Google announced today that the SDK for the next version of Google Android is now available.
The upcoming Android 1.6 (codename Donut) is not a major update but still includes a number of interesting features. Among those are CDMA connectivity and support for new screen sizes (including QVGA and WVGA), gesture APIs, a text-to-speech engine, a new VPN control panel in Settings, a new battery usage screen showing users which applications and services are consuming battery power, and a redesigned Quick Search Box.
The Android Market will also get an update. The homescreen will feature Apps, Games, and Downloads categories and each category will show further details such as Top paid, Top free, and Just in. Screenshots and reviews will also be available.
New devices running Android 1.6 are expected to start appearing in October.
