Verizon Wireless is looking to reduce the number of mobile operating systems it supports over the next few years. Today, devices it offers run a variety of operating systems, including Symbian, Windows Mobile, the BlackBerry OS and the iPhone OS. It hopes to cut that down to three or four over the next few years, according to the company’s CEO, Lowell McAdam.
Verizon is also looking at new ways to sell software to consumers. If so, Verizon could be yet another company planning to offer its own application store. Unlike most (such as the BlackBerry App World announced today) which support a single platform, Verizon’s store would cater to the various operating systems it supports.
We should find out more this summer when Verizon will hold its first conference for application developers.
