Samsung confirmed that it will stop offering Symbian-based smartphones in favour of its own Samsung bada operating system. Samsung will continue to offer both Windows Mobile and Android-based smartphones as well. The confirmation came from senior vice president Don Joo Lee.
Samsung is hoping to increase handset shipments by 10 to 20 percent in 2010 over the 200 million expected to ship in 2009. The changes in its mobile operating system strategy are expected to help it achieve this goal. But it’s not clear what percentage of handsets bada will represent in 2010.
The news that Samsung would drop Symbian first emerged earlier this week in a market note from Korean-based HMC Investment Securities. Only days later, Samsung announced its upcoming bada mobile operating system to the world.
