Clearwire to expand to 80 markets by end of 2010

Clearwire

In 2008, Clearwire managed to deploy WiMAX to only two cities: Baltimore, Maryland, and Portland, Oregon. But it has big plans for 2009 and 2010 according to its latest financial results report.

In 2009, Clearwire expects to launch its Mobile WiMAX network in Atlanta, Las Vegas, Chicago, Charlotte, Dallas/Ft. Worth, Honolulu, Philadelphia, and Seattle. In 2010, they will be followed by New York, Boston, Washington, D.C., Houston and the San Francisco Bay Area. This would bring WiMAX coverage to about 120 million U.S. customers.

By the end of the year, Clearwire also expects that there will be almost 100 mobile WiMAX devices available. Laptops, netbooks, handhelds, USBs and modems are mentioned but not mobile phones. Clearwire will offer a number of these, including a dual-mode 3G/4G wireless modem that will automatically switch between WiMAX service and Sprint’s 3G network.
