Apple reaches billionth application download on App Store

Apple

Yesterday afternoon, the Apple App Store registered its billionth application download. This feat is quite incredible when you consider that the App Store only launched about 9 months ago. Putting it another way, it means that over 3 million applications were downloaded each and every day!

The contest that ran with the countdown has wrapped up and one lucky winner will walk away with a 17-inch MacBook Pro, a 32GB iPod touch, a $10,000 iTunes gift card and a Time Capsule.

To date, Apple has sold over 37 million iPhones and iPod touch devices, giving its App Store a significant audience. Meanwhile, competitors are also getting into the game. Google has their Android Marketplace and RIM has just launched its BlackBerry App World. Microsoft is working on its Windows Marketplace for Mobile. Even decice manufacturers such as Nokia and Acer are planning stores of their own.
