According to the October 2009 Mobile Metrics Report from AdMob, the Apple iPhone now accounts for a full 50 percent of all smartphone traffic across the world. It climbed a full 7 percent since the last report was published only a month earlier. Second place is held down by Symbian with a 25 percent share (down from 29 percent) while Android is in third place with 11 percent (up from 10 percent). Both the BlackBerry OS and Windows Mobile platforms recorded declines from the previous month.
Android could be set for even greater gains with up to 18 Android-powered devices expected by the end of the year. Remember that earlier this year, the only Android-powered device available was the T-Mobile G1/HTC Dream. The Verizon DROID alone accounted for 24 percent of all Android U.S. requests only two weeks after its debut on November 6th. The Motorola CLIQ accounted for an additional 6 percent.
