Amazon releases Kindle for PC

As promised, Amazon has released Kindle for PC, a free application that lets users read their Kindle books on their personal computers. Currently available for XP, Vista and Windows 7, a Mac version is coming soon.

“Kindle for PC is the perfect companion application for customers who own a Kindle or Kindle DX,” said Ian Freed, vice president, Amazon Kindle. “Kindle for PC is also a great way for people around the world to access a huge selection from the Kindle Store and read the most popular books of today even if they don’t yet have a Kindle.”

Kindle for PC offers much of the same functionality as the Kindle itself. Users can purchase, download books from the Kindle Store, access their library of previously purchased books, choose from more than 10 different font sizes and adjust words per line, and view notes and highlights marked on Kindle, Kindle DX, iPhone, and iPod touch. Windows 7 users will also be able to zoom in and out (and turn pages with a future release) with gestures. It also comes with Amazon’s Whispersync technology to allow synchronization of bookmarks and last page read across devices. Unfortunately, it does not support Kindle newspapers, magazines, and blogs.

Kindle for PC also supports full colour. Could a Kindle supporting colour be around the corner?

Kindle for PC is now available as a free download to readers in over 100 countries. Unlike the Kindle which is yet to be available in Canada, Kindle for PC can be downloaded here in Canada.
