slotMusic: SanDisk introduces new physical music format

SanDisk

SanDisk unveiled a new physical music format today in partnership with EMI Music, SONY BMG, Universal Music Group, and Warner Music Group. The format, called slotMusic, is nothing more than a microSD card loaded with DRM-free MP3 music (320Kpbs DRM-free MP3 format). It will also include liner notes, album art, videos, and other creative content chosen by the artist.

The slotMusic card is intended primarily for microSD-enabled mobile phone or MP3 player. But it will also be bundled with a USB sleeve to ensure compatibility with PCs where microSD card slots are not as prevalent.

Users will also be able to add their own content to a slotMusic card, creating their own playlists and media libraries.

A complete list of slotMusic albums as well as availability and pricing will be announced in time for the upcoming holiday season. They will first go on sale in the U.S. at retailers such as Best Buy and Wal-Mart. Europe will follow a bit later.

Is there really a future for any physical music format anymore? We will have to see but I would not bet the farm on slotMusic.
