Amazon announced today that Sony BMG Music Entertainment is bringing its music catalog to Amazon MP3 in a DRM-free format. Sony BMG is the last of the four major music labels to announce such a move. When SONY BMG is added later this month, Amazon MP3 will be the only retailer to offer customers DRM-free MP3s from all four major music labels, as well as over 33,000 independent labels. Amazon MP3 customers will discover DRM-free MP3s from SONY BMG’s vast rosters of artists representing virtually every genre of music.
Sony BMG content should start to appear on Amazon MP3 later this month.
With the Warner announcement just weeks earlier, Amazon MP3 has positioned itself as a credible competitor to Apple’s iTunes service. It will be interesting to see how Apple responds.
