VIA unveiled its NanoBook Ultra Mobile Device Reference Design today at the Computex trade show. Based on the VIA Ultra Mobility Platform, the tiny notebook packs quite a bit into a package that measures 230 x 171 x 29.4 millimeters (about 9 x 6.7 x 1.16 inches) and weighs 850 grams (30 ounces). The VIA Ultra Mobility Platform consists of the VIA C7-M processor and the VIA VX700 chipset. No other x86 platform delivers all the portable performance you need on just 7W of power.
In terms of specs, it is powered by a VIA 1.2GHz C7-M ULV processor. It comes with 1GB RAM, either a 30GB or 60GB hard drive, a 7-inch WVGA 800×400 with Touch Panel, 802.11 b/g Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, a 4-in-1 card reader, and it can run Windows XP or Vista as well as most flavours of Linux. VIA estimates that it can deliver up to 4.5 hours of battery life.
If you like what you see, there is good news. Packard Bell will offer it as the EasyNote XS in Europe and Via expects to announce a US partner later this month.
