The rumours last week were true. Sony announced a US$100 price cut on its 60GB PlayStation 3, bringing the price down to what it was for the 20GB before it was discontinued. Sony will also brings its 80GB PS3 to the US after introducing it in Korea back in May.
The 60GB PS3 will sell for US $499 (CAD$549) with a bundled copy of the online racing MotorStorm game. The new 80GB version will be available starting in August for US$599.
Sony is lagging its competitors in the latest generation console wars after enjoying domination with the PS2. Whether this price cut is enough to reinvigorate PS3 sales remains to be seen. Microsoft could simply respond with a price cut of its own (the Xbox 360 has yet to see a price cut since its introduction about 18 months ago) and the Nintendo Wii continues to fly off the shelves (when they’re even on the shelves).
