Samsung announced a new 1.8-inch 64GB solid state drive (SSD). This latest drive is based on an eight gigabit (GB) single-level-cell (SLC) NAND which improves read and write performance by 20 percent and 60 percent respectively (delivering 64MB/s read and 45MB/s write speeds) when compared to the 32GB SSD drive unveiled last year.
Mass production is expected to begin in the second quarter of this year.
Rumours that Apple could abandon hard drives in its iPod lineup in favour of SSD drives gains credence given that the drives used are 1.8-inch ones.
