Once the FCC approved a Wi-Fi enabled BlackBerry, it was only a matter of time before Research in Mothion (RIM) announced it. Yesterday, RIM unveiled the BlackBerry 8820 smartphone, the first BlackBerry device to support Wi-Fi (802.11 a/b/g). It can seamlessly switch between cellular networks and a Wi-Fi network to allow users to access email, Instant Messaging, organizer, web browsing and other mobile data applications. It also comes with integrated GPS.
In terms of specs, it features quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE support (no 3G capabilities), a full QWERTY keyboard, a trackball navigation system (replacing the jog dial), a QVGA display, Bluetooth 2.0 (with A2DP/AVRCP), a microSD (microSDHC compliant) slot, and the Roxio Media Manager for BlackBerry to manage all your media.
The first carrier to offer the BlackBerry 8820 will be AT&T later this summer. Other carriers should follow in the upcoming weeks.
