The US International Trade Commission (ITC) has denied a request by Qualcomm to stay a ban on imports of new mobile phones equipped with Qualcomm 3G chipsets that may be infringing on Broadcom Corp. patents. This is by no means over as Qualcomm has asked a federals appeal court for an emergency stay of the decision.
The ban does not include phone models that had been imported up to June 7 but it affects future devices that a number of carriers, including Sprint, Verizon and T-Mobile, planned to offer to their customers.
The CTIA, a wireless industry group, has also indicated that it has called on President Bush to veto the ITC ban.
