No big surprise given the that the trend has been in evidence for a while now but IDC reports that traditional PDA shipments dropped 43.5 percent over the same quarter last year with only 720,000 units shipped. With Dell’s withdrawal, some vendors were able to increase marketshare though.
The top five vendors are Palm (317,300 units), HP (168,800 units), Mio (97,691 units), Dell (23,975 units), and Fujitsu Siemens (21,482 units).
Fujitsu Siemens Computers (FSC) also announced that it intends to withdraw from the PDA market by the end of 2007, citing the declining market and putting an end to the Pocket Loox line.
IDC defines handheld devices as devices that are pocket-sized, either pen or keypad-centric, capable of synchronizing with desktop or laptop computers but that do not include telephony but may include wireless capabilities that enable Internet access and text communication.
