Arstechnica is indicating that its sources have indicated that Apple is planning a media event described as as very major product launch, something completely unexpected for September 5th. The prediction is that new iPods will be unveiled (how is that unexpected?). Our sources are slim on details for exactly what will be announced, but said that at least one of the things that will come out of September 5th will be a new iPod.
An earlier report by AppleInsider suggests that up to 4 new models could be unveiled. Among these, we could see a full-screen video iPod running modified Mac OS-based software and a squarish iPod nano capable of video playback and also sporting some sort of Mac OS-based software. Pictures of the new iPod nano surfaced on a number of sites last week but were then pulled down due to requests from Apple’s legal department, lending credence to the claims that they were genuine.
Another long-shot rumour suggests that the iPhone nano could also be unveiled.
Whether new iPods are announced on September 5th or not, I expect that we will see an announcement before the holiday season as the whole iPod lineup has not been refreshed for a year and is overdue for one.
