More on the Intel Ultra Mobile Device Platform

Some more news is coming out of the Intel Developer Conference taking placing place in China.

The just announced Intel Ultra Mobile Platform 2007 is based on a 90nm single core processor that will run at either 600MHz (the A100) or 800MHz (the A110 to be used by the HTC Shift). The processor will have a 400MHz front side bus, a 512Kb 2nd level cache and improved hibernation capabilities. It will use the Intel 945GU Express Chipset (a modified i945 chipset) and the Intel ICH7U I/O Controller Hub. The Ultra Mobile Platform 2007 is powerful enough to run Vista’s Aero Glass.

Aside from HTC using the Ultra Mobile Platform 2007 spec for the Shift, other manufacturers announcing that they have devices in the pipeline are Aigo, Asus, Haier, and Samsung.

Intel also announced the formation of the Mobile Internet Device Innovation Alliance (MIDIA) which will focus on various aspects (like power management, wireless communications, and software integration) of mobile computing. Among the members, you will find HTC, Compal, Asus, Quanta, Inventec, Benq and Canonical (the folks behind the Ubuntu Linux distro).

In the first half of 2008, we can expect to see an update to the Ultra Mobile platform. Codenamed Menlow, it will feature a new 45nm processor (codename Silverthorne) and a next-generation chipset (codename Poulsbo).

As reported earlier, Intel announced the term Mobile Internet Device (MID) to differentiate these smaller devices from Ultra Mobile Personal Computers (UMPC).
