Windows Mobile 6 comes with support for new screen resolutions, including a square 320 by 320 pixel one. In a recent blog entry on the Windows Mobile Team Blog, Mike Calligaro wrote, There’s now an emulator image for a 320×320 “Windows Mobile Professional” (the new name for PocketPC) image. Now, I’m certainly not going to announce any devices that will use this new resolution. But you can assume that we didn’t go through the large task of supporting 320×320 for our health.
So, who could be wanting to use this resolution? Brighthand makes a case suggesting that it’s none other than Palm, Inc. Its Palm OS-based Treos have used 320×320 for years and with Palm already confirming intent to release devices running Windows Mobile 6, it seems like a good guess. Interestingly, Palm will need to use either Windows Mobile Classic or Professional as Standard (ie, the Smartphone version) does not support 320×320.
The Windows Mobile Team Blog also has an interesting read on the challenges faced by the team associated with working with yet another resolution option.
