A French commission has recommended that the French lexicon add the term “terminaux mobiles de poche” to describe “smarpthones”. The mandate of the Commission générale de terminologie et de néologie is to prevent English terms from being adopted into the French language. Instead, in conjunction with the Academie Francaise, they come up with appropriately French words or phrases to describe the new terms.
Some fifty technology terms have recently received the attention of the commission which presented its recommendations back in late November. Among them are "phishing" to be replaced by "filoutage" and "balado-diffusion" for "podcasting". The commission is not always successful. Last year, "causette" failed to replace "chat".
All I know is that "terminal mobile de poche" is quite a mouthful!
