AppleInsider is reporting that at least one reason why the Apple iPhone is not yet in Canada is the high cost of wireless plans. The lack of wireless competition puts Canada at a disadvantage compared to other countries (including the US), according to Michael Geist, Canada research chair of Internet and e-commerce law at the University of Ottawa.
A plan similar to what AT&T offers in the US (US$59.99 for 450 anytime minutes, 5000 additional night and weekend minutes, and unlimited data) would cost almost CAD$300 through Rogers in Canada (the only GSM carrier unless you count its Fido subsidiary). Could Apple be pushing Rogers to lower its rates for an iPhone plan? But why would Rogers lower its prices (and profits)? It’s not like there is another Canadian carrier that could swoop in and offer the iPhone instead.
Rogers has also distanced itself in the past from rumours that it would carry the iPhone.
Best Buy also muddied the waters this weekend with its online ad that hinted that the iPhone was coming to Canada.
