Following in LG’s BH100 dual format Blu-ray and HD DVD player’s footsteps, Samsung has announced plans to release a dual format DVD player. The Duo HD player (BD-UP5000) will play both HD-DVD and Blu-Ray Disc formats (and support their respective interactive technologies, HDi and BD-Java). Samsung had gone back and forth for some time on whether to release such a product so it’s nice to see that they have made up their minds.
Consumers are hungry for more HD content but are currently confused about competing formats. Samsung’s Duo HD player will allow consumers access to every HD movie title available regardless of the authoring format, said Dongsoo Jun, Executive Vice President of the Digital AV Division at Samsung Electronics.
Pricing and availability details were not revealed but Samsung did indicate that its dual format player will be out in time for the holidays.
