ASUS will start to ship its new Eee (which stands for Easy to learn, easy to work and easy to play) low-cost notebook in September, according to DigiTimes. Unveiled back at Computex in June, the Eee will ship in three configurations. And ASUS has big expectations for this tiny notebook, expecting to ship up to 5 million in 2008, according to company chairman Jonney Shih
The Eee will sell for US$199, US$239, US$349 and US$369 depending on configuration. Details on what these configurations are has not been disclosed but at Computex, ASUS showed off a model that featured an Intel Celeron M processor, a 7-inch 800×480 display, 512MB RAM and up to 16GB of flash memory, a built-in 300K pixel video camera, 802.11 b/g Wi-Fi and support for both Windows XP or Linux. I’m guessing the more expensive models would run Windows XP.
Shipments to the US, Europe, China and Taiwan are expected to begin in mid-September. 20,000 units will go out in the first shipment.
