The USB Implementers Forum, Inc. (USB-IF) has announced a new USB specification called Micro-USB. Intended to replace the mini-USB connector on portable products such as mobile phones, the new Micro-USB will come with a stainless steel shell which yields more than 10,000 insertion cycles for longer life and higher durability, and passive latching mechanism for higher extraction forces.
The USB-IF has not revealed when we will see the Micro-USB in new devices.
You’ll forgive me if I don’t jump for joy at the idea of yet another USB standard. I can’t help but think that I will have to carry more cables and accessories with me.
