New UMPC designs are expected in early 2007. Many expect manufacturers to learn from the first generation and deliver smaller and more powerful devices. A taste of things to come surfaced today when Intel provided a sneak peek at a Yahoo-branded device. Details are scarce but the presentation revealed that power consumption is expected to be half and size about a quarter of today’s processors. TG Daily speculates that this suggests a low-voltage version Core Solo processor. The device will focus on mobile applications such as mobile Internet and email access as well as both GPS and Wi-Fi support.
Whether or not we see a Yahoo-branded device remains to be seen but the trend towards smaller, low-power devices could turn UMPCs into the success that many were hoping for.
