HP is working on a location-aware adventure game where players use iPAQ handheld devices equipped with GPS to drive the story forward. Working with the U.K.’s Historic Royal Palaces, a charity that looks after five palaces, players will explore the Tower of London and its grounds. Moving into certain locations will trigger digital files linked to that spot. Players will get to meet historical prisoners such as Guy Fawkes and Anne Boleyn, one of Henry VIII’s wives as well as the famous Beefeaters. The prisoners will try to convince the players to help them escape by using ropes, bribing guards, smuggling letters and avoiding the Beefeaters. If players fail, the prisoners will spend the rest of their virtual lives locked away in the Tower (or until the next game).
The toolkit used to develop this game is available as a free download for non-commercial use at www.hpl.hp.com/mediascapes.
