Microsoft and QUALCOMM have announced that they will collaborate on a port of the Windows Mobile OS to QUALCOMM’s Mobile Station Modem (MSM) chipsets. A large number of phones already use the MSM chipsets which handle functions like CDMA2000 1XEV-DO and UMTS, hardware accelerated multimedia, multi-megapixel camera support and more. This additional functionality should allow manufacturers to reduce development cycle times and hopefully prices.
We can expect to see the first phones making use of the MSM chipsets supporting the Windows Mobile platform sometime in 2007.
